The economy may be a mess, but your wallet doesn't have to be. Whether your hours got cut because of COVID-19, or your job closed completely, getting creative and thinking outside the box could help bring in enough funds to pay your phone bill and keep a little food in the fridge. All it takes is a small portion of your time, your smartphone, and social media accounts to get your hustle started.
Here Are Two Ways to Earn Extra Cash
Hustle #1. Online Thrift Shop
Cleaning out your closet and getting rid of clothes and shoes you no longer wear and can fit is easy with Poshmark, Ebay, and Depop, applications (apps) that make reselling an easy process from your phone. Those shoes you ordered that were too small and that dress you thought would be the center of attention at that airbnb party is taking up space in your closet, so taking a few pics and uploading it to one of the apps mentioned above isn't a bad idea. Say, for instance, you sale 3 dresses for $15 each, a pair of cute shoes for $30, and 2 pairs of pants for $16 a piece. The total earnings would be $107. Potentially, the earnings could be a lot higher depending on the quality of the pieces you sale. Making money from your room is just that easy!
Hustle #2. Sell Your Art
Do you paint, play an instrument, make candles, or write? If so, you could promote and offer your skills to potential customers, aka anyone with a social media account. Everyday I see beautiful artwork going viral on twitter and getting the recognition it deserves. That could be you too. Creatives are being discovered now more than ever, so you don't want to miss this train. If you, or someone you know, plays an instrument, you could produce beats and sell them each for $25 or more. For my literary artists, offer to build and edit resumes, write product descriptions, and even edit your peers' essays. Get creative and put your work out there.
Though I only listed two ways to increase your cash flow, it is important to note that each one can be split into various forms. For example, you could have a store on Poshmark and Depop specifically for clothing, jewelry and accessories, and then have a separate store on eBay for electronics and/or art. These three apps are the most prominent tools for reselling and up-cycling items and will definitely bring potential customers your way. Remember that each sale will add up over time, so don't get discouraged if sales start out slow.
