We're back with the spotlight pieces! Enjoy this spotlight on an amazing Georgia Tech student named Mikalah Thomas.
1. What are your short-term and long-term goals?
My short-term goal is to learn more about graphic design and video production. My long-term goal is to develop and leverage my preexisting skills such that I can obtain a job position that encompasses all of my interests, rather than being limited to a job that only fulfills one or two of them.
2. What are some of your hobbies?
My hobbies include watching Hulu, shopping, and looking up new hairstyles.
3. What has your experience as a black woman been like going to a predominantly white institution (PWI)?
My experience at a PWI has been interesting, but not unexpected. In coming into college from high school, where I would sit in class with all black people, I now sit in classrooms where I am often the only black person. While at first I felt like slightly isolated, over the years I’ve grown accustomed to it, so it doesn’t really phase me that much anymore. Additionally, being involved within the black community on campus and surrounding myself with black friends has made up for the occasional lack of belonging that I get from my classroom settings.
4. What are your plans after college?
I’m not 100% sure what I want to do after college considering my career interests change frequently, but I would love to work for The Walt Disney Studios, Paramount Pictures, Universal Pictures, or Warner Bros.
5. What is a quote or motto that you live by?
Ephesians 4:2 Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love.
6. What is one piece of advice that you would offer a high school student?
One piece of advice I would give to a high schooler is to analyze who and why you’re surrounding yourself with the people in your life.
7. What is your favorite subject and why?
My favorite subject is Film & Media because I like learning about the different ways that film and media make an impact on our society.
8. What have you learned from being in college?
One thing I’ve learned while in college is the importance of perspective. While it can be tempting to look at things from your own perspective, it can often be limiting.
9. What is one of your greatest accomplishments?
One of my greatest accomplishments is recently becoming a 2019 Forbes Under 30 Scholar!
