In honor of Project Rejuvenate Earth (PRE), I want to do a short blog on how we can take care of our home. As some of you may know, we recently held our COVID-edition PRE and we had such a great time. We even had some special guests come out and help us make the Earth a bit more beautiful. We are so appreciative. There are ways that we can make an impact every day, so I want to share some of those with you. Some of these ways can also decrease our carbon footprint.
Reduce, Reuse, Recycle - I definitely wish I was better at this because it's not hard to recycle if you have the correct information. Recycle things like bottles, cans, paper, and cardboard. No plastic bags or things of that nature, and watch out for things that can get tangled and harm wildlife if it happens to get into the water or something like that. For example, my friend wrote on Facebook about removing the little strings of masks that go around our ears because it can get into the water and do harm. It takes a moment to remove those from masks and safely recycle, so please beware of that. Most recycling areas have images or words to explain what to recycle and where. I know that on my college campus recycling bins were everywhere. For more info, refer to this Waste Management recycling article. Also, there are so many infographics on Google.
Using Less Water - Taking shorter showers or taking baths, turning the water off while brushing your teeth, turning the water off while washing dishes, trying to wash clothes all at once versus several times throughout the week. All of these are ways to conserve water. Turning off the taps, boiling water, reducing food waste, steaming veggies, and getting a low-flow toilet (if possible) are more ways to conserve water.
Preserving Energy - Turn off the lights, unplug things, lower the temperature of the water heater, use energy efficient lightbulbs, replace home air filters, use a ceiling fan, etc.
Educate Others - Share this blog or other sources. Post about saving the Earth on social media (best practice as many could be reached), teach your friends how to recycle, or even start your own Earth club.
Plan Your Own Clean Up Day - It's really not that hard to do. Pick a place that needs cleaning, make a cool flyer, post it on social media, recruit friends, tell them to wear their masks and gloves. You can provide supplies if you're able, tell everyone to bring their own, or have everyone sign up to bring something to the clean up. This is a small but mighty way to beautify your local community and make the Earth smile.
Other things you can do: volunteer, use less plastic and more reusable bags, plant a tree, carpool or use a bike. There are so many things that we can do on a day-to-day basis to make the world a better and more livable place. We should all do our part.
