Interested in Greek Life? Dos and Don'ts

Updated: Jan 17, 2020

This blog was requested. Being a part of greek life is a huge deal, especially if you have greeks within the family. It can be exciting to explore the different organizations, attend events, and to think about which org you may want to be a part of. However, there are ways to show interest and present yourself, and there are inappropriate ways to act. Here are some tips for those interested in the divine nine organizations specifically.

DOs

1. Go to events and get to know the people in the different organizations. This is how you will get to know people and see who they are and if you can see yourself interacting with them long term. Going to the events of the specific organization you're interested in will show them that you are interested.

2. Do your research. Learn about the different organizations and the people within them. Learn about what they stand for and what each one is passionate about so that you can make a sound and informed decision.

3. Be discrete. Not everyone needs to know which organization you're interested in joining. If you go around telling, this will be a bad look. Keep it to yourself and show that you are interested in some of the ways mentioned above.

4. Keep an eye out for information regarding that organization. Be sure to attend any important informationals and/or events.

5. Be sure to check requirements to make sure that you meet them. Both the organizations and the university may have specific requirements for joining any organization.

DON'Ts

1. Go around doing an organization's call or holding up their hand sign. This is reserved for members only.

2. Again, don't go around telling everyone which organization you are interested in joining.

3. Wear any clothing with an organization's letters if you are not a part of that organization. Again, this is reserved for members only.

4. Don't bad mouth or trash any organization.

5. Don't join an organization based on superficial reasoning, like its colors or just because your best friend is a part of it. Make sure that you're joining for yourself and because, based on research, it seems like a good fit for you.

I hope that some of this helps in your journey of finding out whether or not greek life is for you. Remember to be yourself, network, and make the best decision for you. Also, don't feel like this has to be a rushed process. If you don't get to join an organization during college, there are opportunities to do so afterwards.
