Good Reads

Updated: Jan 17, 2020

Disclaimer: I do not get a change to read as much as I'd like since I am a college student, but I do enjoy reading when I can. Most of the books that I will mention are books that I have read in my African American Literature class recently. I'm going to do my top 4. I hope you pick one up and read! Reading is truly good for the soul, and an escape from reality.

1. Becoming x Michelle Obama - This is one that I had the pleasure of reading unrelated to class. I know that everyone probably has this on their top reads list, but it's truly a good book. I've heard that the audio is also worth listening to. It's a compelling story and a deeper look into the life of our former FLOTUS. I almost felt invasive reading it, but it added depth to the wonderful, strong, and amazing woman that is Michelle Obama. I'd definitely encourage people to read this book. It left me feeling as though I should never settle for less in love and that following your dreams, reflecting on life, and self-assessment is important.

2. Know the Mother x Desiree Cooper - This book includes many short stories that challenge us to think about our personal roles, or the roles of others that we know, as mothers, daughters, wives, etc. There are challenges that come with being a woman and wearing these many different hats that we have to wear. So, I found the short stories compelling and very raw, causing me to reflect on my personal roles as a black woman who is a daughter, a friend, etc.

3. Redefining Realness x Janet Mock - This memoir is a compelling story of the life of Janet Mock, a prominent figure in the trans community. She describes growing up and feelings of isolation and loneliness as she finds herself and comes to term with who she is and receiving that love and support from different people in her life. However, it is not an easy road, and she makes that very clear. The realness and rawness of this story is one that touches me and gives me much needed insight.

4. Silver Sparrow x Tayari Jones - This story provides many ideas about independence, coming-of-age, family ties, and more, but with a twist. I love that this story is told from two perspectives, making us think about narrators and whether or not we trust them. I think I enjoyed this book because it's tied together so well. I wanted to read this book from cover to cover, and I did. It's also set in Atlanta, which I am familiar with, so I can easily see the different places. The imagery is vivd and the way that things play out is so interesting. Definitely recommend.

Notice that all of these books are written by black women. Yes to black girl magic! I highly recommend all of these books. They have different stories, but I think you'll find some similar elements in all of them. I'd love to hear what you think once you read them. Lets start a virtual book club! Happy reading.
